Common information

There are a number of reasons why people get headaches, including insufficient circulation, infections, nerve lesions, etc.

The cause of the headaches should be checked – and when possible, determined - by a competent doctor. However, when no such specific reason for the headache is identifiable,  it could well be that the headache is caused by tension in the entire body.

Every muscle, including head muscles, is linked with all other muscles in the body. Therefore, head muscles also react to muscle tension in other parts of the body. This natural process can lead to headaches if chronic, uniform tension in the body negatively affects head musculature.

If the misplaced tension comes from the back, it has its roots in the trapezoid – “hood” - muscles, which attach to the back of the head. The trapezoids support the head and make it possible for the head to turn. On the front of the body, throat and neck muscles connect the chest with the head. These muscles direct the turning, lifting and lowering of the head. People need to hold their heads upright in order not to lose their balance. Directed by the autonomic nervous system, neck muscles automatically do this for us.

Kyphosis – buckling – of the thoracic spine puts a great deal of stress on throat and neck muscles, as they work to keep the head upright. This can lead rapidly to muscle tension, which in turn induces headaches. If the tension remains for a long period of time, the musculature hardens, and adjacent nerves and bloodstreams constrict. This can cause headaches to take on various manifestations, to spread and/or intensify.
